Description

The metical is the official currency of Mozambican since 1980, when it replaced the escudo. The name is derived from the Arabic word “mithqal,” an alternative name for the gold dinar coin. The first metical coins were introduced in denominations 50 centavos, 1, 2+12, 5, 10 and 20 meticais, followed by 50 meticais in 1986, 100, 500 and 1000 meticais in 1994, 5000 meticais in 1998 and 10,000 meticais in 2003. In 2006, Banco de Moçambique (Bank of Mozambique) introduced a new series of coins in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 20, 50 centavos and 1, 2, 5, 10 meticais.

The 2 Mozambican meticais coin front design features the logo of the Banco de Moçambique (Bank of Mozambique) and the issue date. The reverse coin design illustrates a coelacanths fish and the denomination. This coin is part of the 2006 – 2012 series, its rim is alternating plain and fluted, and its color is silver.
